A large-scale power grid failure occurred in Georgia, leaving millions of people without electricity. The causes of the widespread power outage are currently unknown; experts are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Residents of Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Kobuleti, Telavi, and other towns and cities were left without power. Preliminary estimates suggest that the blackout may have affected millions of people.
In addition to power outages, communication problems were reported. In particular, the 5G network stopped working for subscribers of certain mobile operators, signal quality deteriorated, and home and mobile internet service was intermittent. It was also noted that the website of the Georgian Ministry of Energy was temporarily unavailable. In Tbilisi, traffic lights stopped working due to the power outage, complicating traffic flow.
The Georgian power grid operator has not yet issued an official statement, and company representatives did not respond to journalists’ inquiries. Levan Mebonia, director of the Enguri Hydroelectric Power Plant, commented on the situation, stating that he is currently investigating the causes of the outage.
A similar incident occurred in Georgia on April 19, 2025. At that time, the cause was a failure on the “Kavkasioni” power line.
