China uses consumer substation for backup power supply
State Grid Suqian Power Supply Company in Suqian, China, provided an alternative power supply during the complete shutdown of the 110 kV Yezhuang substation. To do this, it used the idle 110 kV Lisheng substation owned by a consumer, ECNS reports.
Work for a new campus
In August, the company planned to relocate and upgrade the 110 kV Shengzhuang and Zhuoye lines for the construction of a new campus of Suqian University. The publication describes this project as important for the city.
During the reconstruction, the Yezhuang substation was planned to be shut down for five days. This could have affected critical consumers in its power supply area, including the new Hubin district.

Alternative scheme
The usual option involved building temporary 10 kV connection lines to transfer the load from Yezhuang to other substations. According to the company, this approach would have required significant costs and time, while a larger power supply radius could have reduced grid reliability.
After assessing the situation, the company obtained the Lisheng owner's consent to use the facility for alternative power supply. During this period, State Grid Suqian Power Supply Company strengthened supervision of the substation and carried out dispatching, operation and maintenance in accordance with main grid standards.
The parties established a joint coordination mechanism to temporarily adjust settings and switching operations. According to the company, consumers experienced no outages or power supply disruptions. State Grid Suqian Power Supply Company believes that this scheme can be used during repair shutdowns of old substations in areas with high loads and weak grids.
