UK warned of 1.4 GW capacity reserve shortfall — OilPrice

The UK’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) warned of a 1.4 GW shortfall in reserve generating capacity expected during the Monday evening peak. At the same time, the operator stressed that the situation does not pose a risk to consumers’ electricity supply, and the UK energy system remains stable.

OilPrice reports, citing a NESO statement. The operator issued an Electricity Margin Notice, a preventive notification for electricity market participants intended to encourage action to increase the available capacity reserve.

Warning for the energy market

NESO explained that such a notice indicates a need for a larger margin between forecast electricity demand and available supply. It does not mean that power outages are inevitable or that available generation is insufficient to cover current demand.

During spring and summer, the operator had already issued similar warnings several times amid record heat. At the time, generators were asked to increase capacity availability due to low wind speeds.

Expected increase in wind generation

The reserve shortfall was expected to end overnight from Monday to Tuesday, when stronger winds and increased electricity production by wind farms were forecast.

Last year, wind generation provided nearly 30% of electricity in the UK. Under favorable wind conditions, its share can reach 44%, while gas generation serves as backup when winds are weak. The report also notes that integrating an increasingly large share of wind and solar energy requires billions in investment to expand and modernize power grids.
