AbTis retains US patent for AbClick platform

South Korean biotechnology company AbTis reported that the US Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) upheld the company’s US patent for its AbClick platform. In its final written decision in an inter partes review proceeding, the board rejected all challenges by petitioner Anjinmoto, Korea Herald reports.

Patent challenges

Anjinmoto argued that the patent did not meet the requirements of Section 112 of the US Patent Act regarding written description, enablement and definiteness. The petitioner also challenged the patent under Sections 102 and 103 of the law, including by citing a lack of novelty and obviousness, and raised procedural and evidentiary objections.

PTAB rejected all of the petitioner’s arguments, so the AbTis patent remains in force.

AbClick platform

AbClick is a platform for site-specific conjugation of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). It enables drug components to be attached to the Lys248 residue in the Fc region of an antibody. According to AbTis, the technology is intended to create highly homogeneous ADCs with a controlled drug-to-antibody ratio and stable product quality.

The company is developing several ADC programs based on this platform and is seeking opportunities to collaborate with global biopharmaceutical companies. AbTis also plans to expand its presence in the United States, develop technology licensing and establish new partnerships, based on the PTAB decision.

AbTis CEO Choi Hyun Seok stated that the board’s decision is significant objective support for the originality and patent competitiveness of the platform. According to him, the company plans to accelerate the development of strategic partnerships and the commercialization of the technology worldwide.
