Daewoong Pharmaceutical receives US patent allowance for mRNA technology
South Korean pharmaceutical company Daewoong Pharmaceutical has received a patent allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for ionizable lipid technology used in its eTurna messenger RNA delivery platform.
As Korea Herald reports, patent allowance status means that a patent application has been approved. However, the company must complete additional procedures before the patent is officially registered in the United States and becomes enforceable.
Lipid nanoparticles for mRNA delivery
The patent covers ionizable lipids used to form lipid nanoparticles. These nanoparticles encapsulate mRNA strands to deliver them to target cells. This technology is an important component in the development of messenger RNA-based therapeutics.

In May, Daewoong acquired intellectual property rights to the Epigenetic Reprogramming of Aging platform. It uses mRNA to deliver reprogramming factors to aging cells in order to restore some of their youthful functions without fully changing cellular identity. The company is developing potential anti-aging treatments based on this technology.
Patent specification data
According to the patent specification, delivery of lipid nanoparticles to human skin fibroblasts and aging tissues promoted skin regeneration and reduced aging-related markers. The nanoparticles also demonstrated efficient delivery to immune cells, indicating that the technology may be used not only for skin-related developments.
Daewoong CEO Park Sung-soo said that the US patent allowance is an important step in strengthening the company's technological competitiveness in the global mRNA therapy market. According to him, the company plans to accelerate the clinical development of drugs from its preclinical portfolio and develop anti-aging treatments for the global market.
