HK inno.N announces world’s first EPD for an oral drug
In Oslo, Norway, South Korean pharmaceutical company HK inno.N announced that its K-CAB Tab. 50mg drug for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease became the world’s first finished oral medicine to receive an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The company was presented with the certificate during a ceremony in Oslo.
Environmental impact assessment
As The Korea Herald reports, an EPD reflects a product’s environmental impact throughout its entire life cycle in accordance with international standards. The results of such an assessment are disclosed after independent third-party verification. The company said the declaration provides an objective assessment of a product’s environmental performance.
The EPD for K-CAB was registered in June on the international EPD Global platform. HK inno.N conducted a life cycle assessment in accordance with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 standards, which establish general principles and requirements for such assessments. The International Sustainability Certification Center independently verified the environmental declaration based on ISO 14025.

A standard for pharmaceuticals
The company said it received the certificate based on PAS 2090:2025, an international standard for pharmaceutical products published by the British Standards Institution in November. The document was developed amid a lack of specific guidance for life cycle assessment of pharmaceutical products.
K-CAB was launched in 20 countries and has entered 55 markets through technology licensing or exports of the finished drug. HK inno.N said the certification will enable it to provide customers and buyers, including in Latin America and Asia, with verified environmental data to meet ESG requirements for reporting emissions in supply chains and environmental due diligence.
