Ghanaian banks wrote off 1.23 billion Ghanaian cedis in bad debts

Ghanaian banks wrote off 1.23 billion Ghanaian cedis as bad debt in the first half of 2026, MyJoyOnline reports. This is 38% more than the 893 million Ghanaian cedis recorded in June 2025.

These charges were classified in reporting as credit losses and impairment. The data are presented in the key income statement indicators of banks operating in Ghana.

Share of non-performing loans

According to the July 2026 monetary policy report, risks to the quality of banking sector assets remained elevated in June, despite improvements in key indicators. The share of non-performing loans declined to 16.1% in June 2026, compared with 23.1% in June 2025.

The indicator adjusted for the category of credit losses for which full provisions have been made improved to 4.6%, compared with 8.5% in the same period of the previous year.

Volume of problematic debt

The volume of non-performing loans declined to 19.9 billion Ghanaian cedis in June 2026 from 20.7 billion Ghanaian cedis a year earlier. The report views these changes as an improvement in credit risk conditions, although asset quality vulnerability remains a concern.

The private sector accounted for the largest share of non-performing loans: its contribution rose to 98% in June 2026 from 96.4% a year earlier. At the same time, the public sector's share declined from 3.6% to 2%.
