India eases restrictions on Chinese investments

India eases restrictions on Chinese investments

The Indian government has approved a partial relaxation of restrictions on Chinese investments, specifically targeting sectors such as electronics, industrial equipment manufacturing, and solar energy. This move is important for addressing capital shortages in several parts of the Indian economy.

Under the new rules, investment proposals in these sectors will be reviewed within 60 days, provided that the controlling stake remains with an Indian resident. Companies with up to 10% Chinese equity are allowed to invest through a simplified procedure, adhering to existing sectoral restrictions. This step marks a gradual reset of relations between India and China after years of tension heightened by border clashes in the Himalayas in 2020.

These changes are expected to encourage investment inflows and support the growth of key strategic sectors in India.
