In Cyprus, the number of unpaid cheques fell over eight months — Cyprus Mail
In Cyprus, the number of cheques returned unpaid in January–August 2026 decreased by 20.5% compared with the same period in 2025. The preliminary list of the Central Bank of Cyprus contained 128 such cheques, compared with 161 a year earlier, Cyprus Mail reports.
Decline in number and value
The total value of cheques on the preliminary list during the first eight months of the year amounted to €315,581. This is 13.7% less than in the same period of 2025, when the figure stood at €365,490.
During this period, 52 legal entities and 24 individuals were added to the preliminary list, for a total of 76 persons. Last year, there were 82 persons in January–August: 46 legal entities and 36 individuals.
August figure increased
At the same time, the number of cheques returned unpaid increased in August. The Central Bank of Cyprus recorded 27 such cheques, compared with 16 in August 2025, which means an increase of 68.8%.

Their total value, on the contrary, declined by 48.8%, from €52,891 to €27,092. In August 2026, six persons were added to the preliminary list: four legal entities and two individuals. A year earlier, there were also six persons, but they included two legal entities and four individuals.
The number of registrations of issuers of such cheques in the Central Information Registry for January–August stood at 86 persons, compared with 80 a year earlier. The Central Bank clarified that these data concern registrations and do not take into account the subsequent removal of persons from the register.
For the whole of 2025, the preliminary list contained 213 cheques with a total value of €630,249. The figure for the first eight months of 2026 represents 60.1% of last year's annual number of cheques and 50.1% of their value.
