A magnetic storm has begun on Earth

On September 8, the first G1-level magnetic storm of September—the lowest intensity on a five-point scale—began on Earth. The geomagnetic activity is linked to a solar plasma eruption that occurred about three days earlier.

 

The plasma cloud reached Earth the previous afternoon and initially caused prolonged geomagnetic disturbances. About a day later, their intensity exceeded the threshold at which the phenomenon is classified as a magnetic storm.

According to forecasts, the heightened geomagnetic activity may persist for another two days or so. During this time, the storm could intensify to a G2 level, which corresponds to moderate intensity. A G3 level cannot be ruled out, though the likelihood of such a scenario is considered low.

One of the noticeable effects of the geomagnetic activity has been the expansion of the auroral zone toward mid-latitudes. A strong surge was observed around midnight.

Currently, auroral activity is estimated at approximately 5 out of 10, but it may intensify again by evening. Depending on how the geomagnetic situation develops, the lower boundary of the aurora zone could shift to 53–56 degrees north latitude.
