In Finland, deaths linked to cosmetic surgical procedures are likely rare. YLE News reports this, citing data from the Patient Insurance Centre and the licensing and supervisory authority.

The Patient Insurance Centre said that over the past ten years, it has not paid compensation in any case related to plastic surgery. At the same time, the centre noted that compensation may be paid with a delay of several years, so the information for recent years may still change.
The licensing and supervisory authority also has no information about people who died in Finland from complications after cosmetic surgery.

Procedure risks
Attention to the safety of such procedures was drawn by the death of influencer Olivia Oras. According to Yle's MOT programme, she lost consciousness under local anaesthesia before liposuction at a cosmetic clinic in Helsinki and later died in hospital. Police said on Tuesday that they would launch a preliminary investigation into her death.
Plastic surgery specialist Kimmo Tanttuula noted that cosmetic operations always involve risks of bacterial infections, bleeding and allergic reactions to medicines. He called the Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, during which a patient's own fat is transferred to the buttocks, the most dangerous aesthetic procedure.
According to Tanttuula, when fat is injected, it can enter the bloodstream and cause a blood clot to form, particularly if the procedure is performed by someone without adequate knowledge of anatomy or training. The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, ISAPS, has also warned that BBL has the highest mortality risk among cosmetic operations: statistically, one in every three thousand procedures may result in a patient's death.
