Breakthrough in lupus treatment: Five patients achieve remission after new therapy
In the United Kingdom, five patients with severe systemic lupus erythematosus achieved remission after receiving innovative CAR-T therapy. Doctors are calling the results a potential breakthrough in the fight against this chronic autoimmune disease.
The study involved nine patients for whom traditional treatment had proven ineffective. Most of them had severe kidney damage due to the progression of the disease.
The CAR-T method involves harvesting the patient’s own T-cells, genetically modifying them, and reintroducing them into the body. This approach effectively “resets” the immune system, which in lupus attacks the body’s own tissues.
Five of the six patients who received the lower dose of therapy achieved sustained remission just a few months after treatment. They showed significant improvement in their condition and restoration of function in the damaged organs.
Scientists note that a single application of CAR-T therapy could, in the future, free patients from the need to take medication for the rest of their lives. At the same time, larger-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm these results.
