A 17-year-old girl in Lviv had a rare tumor removed
Doctors at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv successfully removed a rare pancreatic tumor from a 17-year-old patient using the Da Vinci robotic system.
The tumor formed in the center of the organ and had grown to 6 cm by the time of the surgery. Due to its location, traditional surgical intervention could have resulted in the removal of most of the pancreas.
This could have resulted in the young woman developing lifelong diabetes, requiring insulin injections, and experiencing serious digestive problems.
Thanks to the robotic surgery, doctors were able to remove the tumor while preserving more than 99% of the healthy pancreatic tissue. The procedure lasted about five hours.
The girl was discharged just four days after the surgery. The rare Franz-Gruber tumor is a benign neoplasm and accounts for about 1–2% of exocrine pancreatic tumors. It most often occurs in girls and young women.

In Lviv, doctors performed a rare combined surgical procedure. During a cesarean section, a 26-year-old woman simultaneously had a recurrent ventral hernia removed, which could have caused serious complications after childbirth.
