In the US, Diabetes Care editors join boycott of the American Diabetes Association
In the United States, four editors of the American Diabetes Association’s flagship journal, Diabetes Care, have stopped reviewing submitted manuscripts as part of a boycott of the professional organization. The protest is linked to how the association responded to the expulsion of five of its members from a convention center in New Orleans during a June meeting.
As STAT News reports, the boycott participants include Diabetes Care editor-in-chief Stephen Kahn, as well as Cheryl Anderson of the University of California, San Diego, John Buse of the University of North Carolina, and Elizabeth Selvin of Johns Hopkins University.
Dispute after the New Orleans meeting
Kahn was one of five association members who were expelled from the convention center in New Orleans. They were distributing copies of an editorial published in Diabetes Care concerning cuts to federal research funding.

The protest concerns the expulsion of the members, the American Diabetes Association leadership’s initial response, and its summer review of the circumstances of the incident. Kahn described the editors’ refusal to review manuscripts as effectively a strike against a large corporation. According to him, the participants view it as a boycott by members of a nonprofit organization whose leadership, in their view, acts like a corporate board rather than the leadership of a membership organization.
The association’s position
A representative of the American Diabetes Association said that the organization is aware of these actions. The association also stated that it is focused on fulfilling its mission for the millions of people who rely on it.
