A piece of a Russian drone pierced a 12-year-old girl's liver and damaged a vein
Yasmina, a 12-year-old girl from Kyiv, was injured when a Russian drone crashed right in front of the car in which she was riding to her after-school club. A piece of the Shahed drone pierced the windshield and the front seat before penetrating the child’s abdomen.
The girl was traveling with a friend and her friend’s father. An air raid alert was sounded during the trip, and shortly afterward, the drone crashed and exploded right in front of the car. The children and the driver ran out of the car, but a few minutes later, Yasmina felt dizzy and saw blood on her abdomen.
Passersby administered first aid and called an ambulance. At Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, during an ultrasound and CT scan, doctors discovered a fragment about one centimeter long that had pierced through her liver, damaged one of the largest veins, and come to rest near her spine.
The injury caused massive bleeding and a large retroperitoneal hematoma in the child. After stabilizing her condition, the doctors urgently performed surgery, which lasted nearly four hours.
“The most life-threatening issue was the ruptured vein. We temporarily occluded the blood flow, performed a repair, and restored its patency. As for the liver, we closed the wound channel with a special hemostatic material to stop the bleeding. We managed to preserve all vital organs,” said Oleg Godik, professor and transplant surgeon at Okhmatdyt.
Yasmina is now at home and undergoing outpatient treatment. The girl is feeling much better and wants to return to school and her dance classes as soon as possible.
