How to choose one or several wedding dresses

The number of wedding dresses should be determined not by established rules, but by the format of the celebration, the venue, the budget and the schedule of the day. Ang Jin Yuan, founder of The Ivory and Muse bridal boutiques, advises brides in an article by Channel NewsAsia to first consider the entire wedding scenario and only then select separate looks.

Light or short dresses may be more suitable for an intimate or relaxed ceremony, while a ballroom or formal reception offers more opportunities for a dress with a striking silhouette, embellishments or a long train. For an outdoor event, the weather and surface should also be taken into account, while a celebration involving active movement between locations requires an outfit that is easier to move in.

Looks for different parts of the day

A wedding day may consist of several events: the ceremony, reception, banquet and party. At the same time, several dresses are not mandatory. According to Ang Jin Yuan, a bride should first determine what experience she wants to get from her celebration.

The ceremony dress is usually the main look of the day. Other options may be lighter and more comfortable for socializing with guests or dancing. Several looks also make it possible to showcase different styles and add variety to wedding photographs, especially if the ceremony dress has heavy embellishments or a long train.

The expert cautions that changing outfits requires time not only for the dress itself. It may be necessary to adjust the hairstyle, makeup, jewelry, shoes and veil, prepare the train and the next photo shoot. Therefore, every change of look should improve the course of the celebration rather than take place merely because it feels necessary.

How to refresh one dress

An alternative to several full dresses can be a dress with interchangeable elements. A detachable overskirt can create a formal silhouette for the ceremony and reveal a more streamlined option for the reception. Detachable sleeves or straps, a cape or a bolero can also change the look.

If the dress is made to order, such details should be discussed with the designer in advance. The same look can be refreshed by changing the jewelry, hairstyle, veil or opting for more striking makeup.

Renting or buying

Renting a wedding dress usually costs less than buying one, especially when it comes to designer models. It may suit those who want several looks within their budget or do not plan to keep the dress after the wedding. At the same time, purchasing is necessary for custom tailoring or a personalized design.

If the budget allows spending on only one expensive look, it may make sense to direct the funds toward the most important outfit — often the ceremony dress. According to Ang Jin Yuan, the choice between renting and buying should not be made solely on price: it is important to determine which moments of the wedding are priorities.
