Google Ordered to Loosen Grip on Search by UK Competition Watchdog

The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has ordered Google to loosen its control over search, designating the company as having “strategic market status” under new digital laws. It’s the first Big Tech firm to receive this classification, marking a major step in the UK’s regulation of dominant online platforms.

Under the new status, Google must comply with stricter rules to ensure it doesn’t abuse its market power. Regulators could demand adjustments to search ranking systems and greater transparency around the use of artificial intelligence.

Google warned that excessive regulation could delay new product launches in the UK, while the CMA insists the move will boost competition, giving smaller businesses more room to innovate and compete on fairer terms.
