China to impose strict tariffs on beef imports starting 2026
From January 1, 2026, China will introduce an additional 55% tariff on beef imports, targeting major exporters including Brazil, Australia, and the United States. These restrictions will last for three years with an annual expansion of the import quotas.

In 2024, China imported over 2.8 million tonnes of beef, nearly half of which — 1.34 million tonnes — came from Brazil. Argentina and Australia also rank among the top exporters. Data from January to November 2025 show that Brazilian beef shipments nearly matched the previous year's volumes. Experts believe that the new tariffs will reduce imports in 2026, providing the domestic industry with time to implement structural improvements.
These measures are expected to strengthen the protection of China’s domestic market and support local producers, while gradually easing import restrictions through quota expansions in the coming years.
