Multiplex estimates its war-related losses at over $20 million
The Multiplex cinema chain has suffered more than $20 million in losses as a result of the Russian aggression. Since the start of the full-scale war, nine movie theaters have been damaged, three of which can no longer be restored.
This was reported by Roman Romanchuk, CEO of the Multiplex chain.
According to him, the movie theaters in Mariupol, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih have been completely destroyed. In Zaporizhzhia, the movie theater was destroyed after three direct hits by Russian missiles on a shopping and entertainment center.
Meanwhile, the situation in Kryvyi Rih is not related to combat damage. The movie theater had remained closed since the start of the full-scale war due to security risks, and the company later decided to abandon the project because it was unable to reach an agreement with the landlord on new operating terms.
“Under curfew and air raid alerts, the movie theater loses about 23% of its operating time. It was economically impossible to operate under the pre-war lease model, so we decided to withdraw from this project,” Romanchuk explained.
The movie theater in Kherson has also been closed since the first days of the invasion, but Multiplex does not consider it a total loss. According to the chain’s director, the cinema building sustained only minor damage, but the shopping center itself suffered serious damage, and the security situation does not yet allow operations to resume.
Of the nine damaged movie theaters, the company has already restored six. Locations are once again open at the Retroville and Lavina Mall shopping centers in Kyiv, the Riviera in Odesa, and the Nikolsky and Dafi in Kharkiv.
Despite the losses, the chain continues to expand. During the full-scale war, Multiplex opened a new movie theater in Uzhhorod and increased the number of screens at its existing locations.
Currently, the chain comprises 27 movie theaters and 171 screening rooms. Based on the results for 2026, the company expects revenue growth of approximately 15% in hryvnia terms, provided the current security and economic situation remains stable.
