Ukrainian supermarkets are adjusting their operations due to prolonged air raid alerts
Major grocery chains in Ukraine are adapting their store operations to prolonged air raid alerts. Specifically, Varus, Metro, Auchan, and Spar are implementing different protocols depending on the threat level and the availability of shelters.
Auchan and Metro completely suspend operations during an air raid alert—regardless of whether it involves a missile or drone attack. Auchan noted that in 2025, the chain’s stores were closed for more than 4,000 hours due to air raid alerts.
Metro reports that in some cases, employees may lose up to half a workday due to air raid alerts.
Spar determines its operating procedures based on the store’s location, the availability of shelters, and safety requirements. Specifically, it takes into account “yellow” and “red” threat levels, and for stores located in shopping malls, additional rules set by the mall itself apply.
At Varus, during alerts, they follow government recommendations and the rules for the corresponding danger level. If a store suspends operations, employees proceed to a shelter and return to work after the all-clear is given.
