Four Brazilian Mountain Towns for Winter Getaways
Brazil has four mountain towns that stand out for winter trips thanks to their cooler climate: Campos do Jordão, Gramado, São Joaquim and Domingos Martins. The Rio Times reports on the routes, temperatures and local attractions.
Campos do Jordão and Gramado
Campos do Jordão, in the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range in São Paulo state, has average winter high temperatures of 17–18 degrees and lows of 4 to 6 degrees Celsius. The city is located 167 kilometers from São Paulo; the drive via the SP-123 highway takes about two and a half hours. The publication names the Vila Capivari district, the cable car, Capivari Park, the Morro do Elefante viewpoint and Horto Florestal forest park among local sites.
Gramado, in the Serra Gaúcha region of Rio Grande do Sul state, has winter low temperatures of around 9–11 degrees and highs of 19–21 degrees. The city is slightly more than 100 kilometers from Porto Alegre, and the trip by car or bus takes two to two and a half hours. Buses operated by Viação Citral depart from Porto Alegre’s bus station every 30 minutes, with some services stopping at Salgado Filho Airport. Sites in the city include Covered Street, the Palace of Festivals, Black Lake and Saint Peter’s Church.

São Joaquim and Domingos Martins
São Joaquim, in Santa Catarina state, has the country’s lowest average annual temperature, 13.5 degrees Celsius, according to Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology, INMET. During the coldest months, the minimum temperature can drop to 6 degrees. The nearest airport is in Florianópolis, about 200 kilometers away. The publication lists the Belvedere viewpoint, João Ribeiro Square, the main parish church and the region’s wineries among places in the city.
Domingos Martins, in Espírito Santo state, is the warmest of the four destinations: in winter, the average temperature is 18–19 degrees, daytime air temperatures rise to about 23 degrees, and at night they fall to 14–15 degrees. The city is located 42 kilometers from Vitória, the state capital; buses depart daily from Vitória’s bus station. The main natural attraction is the Pedra Azul granite monolith and the state park around it.
