Online trends are driving growth in inbound tourism to China
The viral online trends “China Cool” and “Chinamaxxing” are driving an increase in the number of international tourists in China, who are increasingly choosing not only traditional sightseeing tours but also immersing themselves in the country’s everyday life. This is reported by ECNS.
The publication notes that this approach to travel is called “China Living”: tourists seek to experience China as locals do. In Guizhou Province, hotel bookings by foreign visitors have risen by 84% as travelers visit ethnic villages and mountainous areas.
In the southwestern province of Yunnan, tourists are drawn to the UNESCO-listed Yuanyang Rice Terraces as well as local markets. Boutique hotels are tailoring their offerings to foreign families by providing personalized service. ECNS cites this trend as one of the fastest-growing segments of the tourism industry.

Among the factors driving the growth of inbound tourism, the publication cites the 240-hour transit visa exemption, paperless tax refunds, AI-powered translation tools, and the widespread adoption of international payment methods in major tourist destinations. According to ECNS, spending by inbound tourists has increased by nearly 73% since June.
The trend has also caught the attention of Elon Musk and his mother, Maye Musk. According to ECNS, they spoke positively about China’s efficiency, cleanliness, and hospitality.
