$20 Billion Lifeline: How Trump Seeks to Rescue Milei From Default

The United States is preparing to provide Argentina with a $20 billion bailout to support President Javier Milei as he battles inflation and a deepening debt crisis. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the Trump administration is ready to extend the loan without strict conditions, though experts warn of major economic and political risks.

According to — "The New York Times"

The move has drawn sharp criticism from American farmers and lawmakers, as China has already stopped buying U.S. soybeans and turned to cheaper supplies from Argentina and Brazil. The American Soybean Association warned that the bailout could worsen competition and further damage U.S. agriculture, which is already struggling with tariffs and falling prices.

Democrats and several Republicans also voiced opposition, accusing Trump of political favoritism and reckless use of taxpayer funds. Economists point out that Argentina has a long history of defaults and remains the IMF’s largest debtor, raising concerns that without a clear strategy the U.S. loan could become another failed investment.
