Where in Ukraine Are the Most Mushrooms? The Best Regions for Mushroom Hunting Have Been Named
With the start of mushroom season, Ukrainians traditionally head to the forests in search of porcini, chanterelles, birch boletes, and honey mushrooms. Experienced mushroom hunters point to several regions where the chances of filling a basket in just a few hours are highest, while in other regions, a bountiful harvest is much rarer.
In Ukraine, there are no universal rules that guarantee a successful mushroom hunt. As Ostap Bogoslavets, a mycologist and research associate in the Department of Mycology at the M. G. Kholodny Institute of Botany of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, told Channel 24, most edible mushrooms grow specifically in forests, since they form a special symbiotic relationship with tree roots—mycorrhiza—through which mushrooms and plants exchange water, minerals, and nutrients. However, among all the mushroom-picking spots in Ukraine, there are certain regions that have long been considered the best.
The Carpathians have long been a veritable treasure trove of mushrooms in Ukraine. However, they are not the only destination for enthusiasts of “quiet hunting.” Polissya is no less popular: the forests of Volyn, Rivne, Zhytomyr, and the northern part of Kyiv Oblast.
Thanks to the abundance of pine and mixed forests, white mushrooms, birch boletes, butter mushrooms, and chanterelles are often found here. Certain forests in the Chernihiv region, as well as in the western regions of Ukraine, are also considered rich in mushrooms, where the combination of moisture and dense forests creates favorable conditions for the growth of many mushroom species. However, it is the Carpathians that attract the most mushroom hunters every year thanks to the diversity of their forests and the long mushroom season.
The Carpathian region is rich in mushroom-picking spots, but each area has its own unique characteristics. Verkhovyna and Vorokhta are considered among the best locations for finding porcini mushrooms. Their high-altitude location and dense spruce forests create favorable conditions for their growth. The unique forest floor retains moisture well even after long periods without rain.
In Mykulychyn, Tataryv, and Yablunytsia, where coniferous and mixed forests predominate, mushroom hunters often find not only porcini mushrooms but also large families of chanterelles and butter mushrooms. The proximity to nature reserves also contributes to the ecological purity of the local forests.
Slavske and Pylypets are known for their beech forests. Here, the mushroom season often begins earlier, and among the most common finds are birch boletes, honey mushrooms, and fragrant forest champignons.
Another popular destination is Yaremche and Mykulychyn. In addition to picturesque landscapes and waterfalls, these places are famous for their autumn honey mushrooms. Many trails wind through the hillsides, which are suitable even for those just starting out in mushroom hunting.
Transcarpathia deserves special attention. The warmest areas of the region kick off the mushroom season earlier than other regions of Ukraine. In oak and hornbeam forests, you can find royal white mushrooms as early as the beginning of summer.
