Instagram launches First Draft for automatic Reels editing

Instagram has begun rolling out a new Reels editing feature called First Draft in its iPhone app. It automatically trims video clips by removing pauses and selecting segments where the main focus is concentrated.

How the feature works

A user can select several clips for a video and press the First Draft button. Instagram then analyzes the videos, trims them, and combines the excerpts into a video ready for further editing and publication.

In an example published by Instagram, several videos lasting more than one minute each were selected for processing. After analyzing the clips, the feature removed pauses and created an initial version of the video.

Where to find First Draft

According to The Verge, First Draft is designed for edits using several clips, videos in which a person speaks on camera, and day-in-the-life videos. The tool can be found in the Instagram camera after recording a video or in the Reels gallery after selecting more than one clip.

Instagram positions First Draft as an initial version of a video that users can refine with other editing tools. The company did not specify whether the feature uses artificial intelligence.
