LinkedIn in Cyprus: boundaries between professional and romantic contacts — Cyprus Mail

In Cyprus, the professional network LinkedIn, intended for job searches, recruitment and business connections, may also be used by some users for romantic initiatives. This creates a risk of mixing work and personal contacts, Cyprus Mail reports.

LinkedIn’s professional community rules state that the service is not a dating site. The platform prohibits unwanted expressions of affection, romantic propositions and sexual innuendo. The publication emphasizes that a public professional profile, a stated workplace or an accepted connection request do not mean consent to romantic propositions or comments about appearance.

Platform audience in Cyprus

According to LinkedIn advertising data, there were around 620,000 platform members in Cyprus at the end of 2025 — approximately 55.8% of the country’s adult population. This was 70,000, or 12.7%, more than a year earlier.

According to Eurostat, 86.5% of people in Cyprus aged 16 to 74 used social media in 2025. Among people aged 16–29, the figure reached 98.3%, the highest level in the European Union.

Cyprus Mail notes that professional networks are particularly useful in shipping, technology, finance and professional services, where companies often look for employees abroad. According to the Cystat statistical service, Cyprus had 13,905 job vacancies in the first quarter of 2026.

Work contacts and personal propositions

Unlike dating services, a message on LinkedIn may concern a vacancy, contract, cooperation or other work. Therefore, a personal invitation from a recruiter, senior colleague, potential employer or important client may have another implication: the recipient may worry whether a refusal will affect employment, an interview, a promotion or a contract.

American football player Noah Pilato said that he agreed to an interview after being contacted by a woman through LinkedIn. At the end of the conversation, she reportedly admitted that the vacancy did not exist and that she had invented it to get his attention.

The publication notes that relationships between people who first crossed paths in a professional environment are possible when there is mutual interest. At the same time, repeated messages without a response, comments about appearance or personal propositions disguised as a business meeting run counter to the expectation that professional contact on the platform will remain professional.
