X is replacing its revenue-sharing program with payments for original content

The social network X is phasing out its current Revenue Sharing program for creators and replacing it with the Original Content Rewards program, which focuses on rewarding original content. New participants will no longer be accepted into the Revenue Sharing program, while current participants will be able to receive payments until September 7, according to TechCrunch.

Starting September 8, creators will be able to apply to participate in the new program. To qualify, creators must have an X Premium subscription, at least 500 verified followers, and 500,000 views on their home feed from verified users over a 90-day period.

X explained that original content may include original reporting and analysis, photos and videos created by the author, as well as self-created memes and graphics. Comments may also qualify under the program’s rules. At the same time, creators who regularly use third-party materials must add significant original value to them.

Content copied from another account, downloaded from someone else’s profile and reposted, as well as reposts without substantive modification, will not be considered original. Allegra Jackia from X stated that the incentives in the previous program had become inconsistent. According to her, creators should focus on producing new content for the platform rather than on maximizing payouts.

In April, X had already attempted to reform its Revenue Sharing program, specifically by reducing payments to aggregators and accounts using clickbait. This sparked complaints from popular accounts that had been earning money under the existing system. Following the negative reaction, Elon Musk reversed some of the changes, notably restoring greater weight to an author’s local audience when calculating payouts.
