Argentina May Face Penalties After Celebrating Its Victory Over England

Argentina’s 2–1 victory over England in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup resulted not only in a spot in the final but also in a major scandal. After the match, the Argentine players displayed a banner with a political slogan, for which FIFA may impose disciplinary measures on the team.

The controversial banner on the soccer field

Immediately after the final whistle, while celebrating their incredible comeback and advancement to the final, Argentine midfielder Giovani Lo Celso and defenders Nicolás Otamendi and Lisandro Martínez unfurled a large banner on the stadium turf. It bore the inscription in Spanish: “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentine”).

According to media reports, the banner originally belonged to fans in the stands, but the players later brought it directly onto the field. This gesture sparked a wave of outrage in the United Kingdom and immediately caught the attention of soccer officials.

The fact is that the rules of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) and FIFA’s disciplinary code strictly prohibit anypolitical, religious, or personal statements, slogans, or symbols on uniforms or during official events at the stadium. The tournament organizers classified the match as high-risk, and U.S. authorities had warned in advance that bringing such paraphernalia would be prohibited.

Reactions from politicians and the head coach’s stance

The incident quickly escalated to the national level. Even before the game, Argentine Vice President Victoria Villarruel had stoked interest in the matchup, calling it “an opportunity to put the invaders in their place.” After the game, she triumphantly commented on the team’s controversial act.

“We were forbidden from bringing this issue into the stadium, but they forgot that we carry it in our blood and in our hearts,” Villarruel noted.

The players themselves also did not hide their emotions. When asked about the banner, midfielder Leandro Paredes replied succinctly: “They will always be Argentine.”

At the same time, Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, tried to distance himself from the conflict, noting that sports and politics should not be mixed, and that the 1982 war was a particularly tragic chapter in history.

What consequences await the Argentine national team?

FIFA is currently awaiting official reports from the match delegates and referees, after which a detailed assessment of the incident will begin. If the organization officially opens disciplinary proceedings and deems the banner to be political, the Argentine Football Association and those directly involved in the incident could face heavy fines or even disqualification.

What is known about the dispute over the islands

The dispute over control of the Falkland (known as the Malvinas in Argentina) between the United Kingdom and Argentina has been ongoing for nearly two centuries, ever since London established its sovereignty over the archipelago in 1833.

The most intense phase of the conflict occurred in 1982, when Argentine troops landed on the islands. This triggered the 74-day Falklands War, which ended with Argentina’s surrender and claimed the lives of more than 900 military personnel on both sides.

Today, the archipelago remains a de facto British overseas territory, a status confirmed by a 2013 referendum in which over 99% of local residents voted to retain that status. However, the UN still classifies the situation as disputed and calls on the countries to resolve the issue of sovereignty through peaceful bilateral negotiations, while for Argentine society, this issue remains an extremely painful national cause.

MEPs are calling for an investigation into the FIFA president over the bonus paid to Trump.

U.S. President Donald Trump may become one of the key figures at the 2026 World Cup final, and FIFA is reportedly ready to deviate from its long-standing ceremonial protocol. This could allow for an exceptional format for the politician’s participation in official match events.
