Pelé's jersey from the 1958 World Cup final sold for a record $4.9 million
A jersey worn by legendary Brazilian striker Pelé during the 1958 World Cup final sold at auction for $4.9 million. The item was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York and has become one of the most expensive soccer memorabilia pieces in history.
“Today’s result is a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of one of the greatest soccer players of all time,” said Brendan Hawks, head of sports strategy and development at Sotheby’s.
Pelé’s jersey from the 1958 World Cup final is his most valuable memorabilia item ever sold at auction.
This same jersey was sold in 2004 for $105,600.
In the 1958 World Cup final, 17-year-old Pelé scored two goals against Sweden, winning the first of his three World Cups.
He still holds the record for the youngest player to score in a World Cup final.
It is noted that Pelé’s jersey is the second most expensive jersey ever sold, after the one worn by Argentine national team player Diego Maradona when he scored the goal known as the “Hand of God” against England at the 1986 World Cup. The jersey was sold in 2022 for 7.1 million pounds.

As a reminder, the Spanish national team became the first finalist of the 2026 World Cup, defeating France in the semifinal match.
Spain’s forward Mikel Oyarzabal tied the national team’s record for the most goals scored in a single World Cup tournament. The forward’s achievement was set following the 2026 World Cup semifinal match.
