Padres infielder Son Songmun records RBI after returning to MLB
San Diego Padres infielder Son Songmun recorded an RBI after returning to Major League Baseball (MLB), but his team lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 4-5 in 11 innings. As Korea Herald reports, Son Songmun batted ninth and started at third base at Tropicana Field.
RBI and stolen base
Son Songmun finished the game hitless in two at-bats, but recorded an RBI, a walk and a stolen base. His batting average fell from .202 to .198.
He was retired in the third and fifth innings, but in the seventh, with one out and a runner on third base, he hit a sacrifice fly to right field. This extended the Padres' lead to 3-1. Against Rays reliever Cam Booser, Son Songmun sent an inside fastball deep into the outfield on a 3-1 count. It was his first RBI since July 20, when San Diego played the Kansas City Royals.
In the ninth inning, with two outs and a runner on second base, Tampa Bay intentionally walked Son Songmun. He then executed a double steal with Xander Bogaerts. It was Son Songmun's 13th stolen base of the season.

Return from the minor league
On August 25, Son Songmun was sent to the minor league and later returned to the main roster after Luis Rengifo and Gavin Sheets were placed on the injured list. Rengifo suffered a knee injury, while Sheets injured his foot in Saturday's game against Tampa Bay. Both players were placed on the 10-day injured list.
Normally, MLB position players must spend at least 10 days in the minor league after being sent down, but they can return earlier as replacements for injured players. The Padres led 3-1 before the bottom of the ninth inning, but closer Mason Miller allowed two runs and blew the save. San Diego was unable to regain the lead in extra innings.

After the loss, the Padres' record stands at 72-65. The team has lost its third consecutive game since Friday and remains third in the National League West.
