Former NBA forward Michael Sweetney dies in the United States at age 43 — Jerusalem Post
Former NBA forward Michael Sweetney has died at the age of 43 in Newark, New Jersey, United States. He died on Wednesday at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, the Jerusalem Post reports. The cause of death was not named.
NBA career
Sweetney played power forward and spent four seasons in the NBA: two each with the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls. In the 2003 NBA Draft, the Knicks selected him ninth overall after his performances for Georgetown University.
In the 2002–03 season, Sweetney averaged 22.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game for Georgetown. In total, he played 96 games for the university team, starting 95 of them, and averaged 18.2 points and 9.2 rebounds.

In 233 NBA games, 73 of which he started, Sweetney averaged 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds. The New York Knicks called him an incredible person and expressed condolences to his family. The Chicago Bulls also conveyed condolences to the former player's loved ones and friends.
After playing in the NBA, Sweetney continued his professional career in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela. From 2019 to 2023, he worked as an assistant coach at Yeshiva University in New York. The team's head coach, Elliot Steinmetz, called Sweetney a close friend and a person who always came to help.
