Chitral Winds Eagle team wins polo tournament in Pakistan — Dawn

The Chitral Winds Eagle team won the trophy at the sixth Ali Sher Khan Anchan Polo Tournament in Pakistan, defeating Chitral-Buni HQ in the final. The decisive match in the free-style polo format took place at Makpun ground in Skardu.

Final featuring two teams from Chitral

Twenty teams competed in the tournament, 18 of which represented Gilgit-Baltistan. At the same time, two teams from Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province reached the final. According to Dawn, thousands of fans, including tourists from Pakistan and other countries, gathered for the final match.

Mohammad Sohail, a player for the winners, said the team enjoyed the final in Skardu. According to him, local residents supported the players without discrimination, while the organizers provided all necessary conditions for the teams that came to the tournament.

Mohammad Ilyas, a player for Chitral-Buni HQ, whose team lost in the final, thanked the organizers, fans and polo enthusiasts.

Spectators and awards ceremony

Fan Ali Abbas said it was regrettable that teams from Gilgit-Baltistan did not reach the final, but noted that the match between the two representatives of Chitral was enjoyed by the public. He also said that polo remains a popular sport that draws large audiences.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi attended the match. He noted that international polo has defined rules, while free-style polo is a distinctive game characteristic of this region. A tourist from Poland described the match as crazy and incredible.

In addition to the polo final, a tug-of-war competition involving local players was held as part of the event. The tournament was organized by the Skardu district administration, the Gilgit-Baltistan Polo Association and the tourism department; it concluded with the presentation of the trophy and prizes.
