Kone suffered a serious leg injury at the 2026 World Cup and will be out for at least 4–5 months

On June 18, Canadian national team midfielder Ismael Koné suffered fractures to his fibula and tibia during a World Cup match. As a result of the injury, he will be sidelined for at least 4–5 months and will not play again in the tournament. The injury was inflicted by Qatari player Modibo during a play.

 

In the 52nd minute of the Canada–Qatar match, with the score at 3–0, Qatari defender Assim Modibo made a rough tackle on Koné, who was later carried off the field on a stretcher.

According to a source, Koné is currently in the hospital. The Canadian will be sidelined for 4 to 5 months. He will not play again in this World Cup.

Modibo apologized to Koné after the match in the Canadian team’s locker room.

As a reminder, Ghana’s head coach, Carlos Queiroz, became the oldest coach to win a World Cup match.

The second round of the group stage is set to begin at the 2026 World Cup. Mexico could secure the first spot in the Round of 16.
