Ghana's national team coach set a World Cup age record

Ghana national team head coach Carlos Queiroz became the oldest coach to win a World Cup match.

The Portuguese coach set this historic milestone after Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup. At the time of the game, Queiroz was 73 years and 108 days old.

He thus surpassed the previous record held by Germany’s Otto Rehhagel, who led the Greek national team to a victory over Nigeria in 2010 at the age of 72 years and 317 days.

Carlos Queiroz has the opportunity to improve on his own record in the upcoming group stage matches against England and Croatia.

Throughout his career, the Portuguese coach has worked with the Portuguese national team, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and a number of other clubs and national teams.

Ukraine opened its medal tally at the 2026 European Fencing Championships, where Alina Komashchuk won the team’s first medal by taking bronze in the women’s individual sabre competition.
