The second round of the 2026 World Cup kicks off: Mexico could be the first to advance to the playoffs
Today marks the start of the second round of the group stage at the 2026 World Cup. Mexico could secure the first spot in the Round of 16.
In Group A, the Czech Republic and South Africa—both of which lost their opening matches—will face off, risking an early elimination from the group stage. This match will be officiated by American referee Tori Penso, who will become only the second female referee in the history of the men’s World Cup.
The group’s marquee match is Mexico vs. South Korea. Both teams started with wins, and the winner will secure a spot in the knockout stage early.
In Group B, Switzerland will face Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both teams let victories slip away in the closing minutes of their first-round matches and now need three points.
Canada will host Qatar in Vancouver. The tournament hosts need a win to keep their chances of advancing to the playoffs alive.
