Ukrainian foil fencer Olga Sopit sensationally won gold at the European Championships

The Ukrainian national team won its second medal at the 2026 European Fencing Championships, which are being held in the French city of Antony. The star of this resounding success was 23-year-old foil fencer Olga Sopit, who won her first-ever gold medal at the continental championship.

After successfully advancing through the qualifying round, the Ukrainian fencer reached the round of 16, where she began a winning streak and secured five consecutive victories on her way to the title.

In the semifinal, Sopit confidently defeated the bronze medalist from the previous European Championship, Spain’s María Marino, with a score of 15–8.

In the final, the Ukrainian athlete faced one of the world’s most decorated fencers—Olympic champion, ten-time world champion, and 15-time European champion Arianna Errigo of Italy. Despite her opponent’s status, Sopit put on a brilliant performance and secured a convincing 15–8 victory, winning her first European Championship gold medal.

Olga Sopit’s gold medal marked Ukraine’s second medal at Euro 2026. Earlier, Ukrainian sabre fencer Alina Komashchuk added to the national team’s medal tally with a bronze medal in the individual competition.

As a reminder, renowned Ukrainian tennis player and world No. 8 Elina Svitolina has officially joined the Kharkiv Football Club, formerly known as Metalist 1925.

Ukraine opened its medal tally at the 2026 European Fencing Championships, where Alina Komashchuk won the team’s first medal by taking bronze in the women’s individual sabre competition.
