Russian flags appeared at the World Cup match between Uzbekistan and Colombia
During a group stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup between the national teams of Colombia and Uzbekistan, symbols of the aggressor country appeared in the stands.
Unidentified individuals brought and unfurled several Russian tricolor flags directly in the fan section.
The incident caused a stir, as the Russian national team has been officially suspended from international competitions due to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The incident was recorded at the famous Azteca Stadium, located in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.
Two flags of the occupying country appeared in the arena’s central stands during a fierce match between the teams. Despite the provocative display of symbols banned in the civilized sporting world, the match continued as scheduled.
The soccer match itself ended with a convincing 3–1 victory for the South American national team.
The Colombians opened the scoring just before halftime, when defender Daniel Muñoz burst into the penalty area and sent the ball into the net with a single touch.
However, in the 61st minute, the Uzbekistan team managed to equalize—Eldor Shomurodov fired a powerful shot, the goalkeeper parried it in front of him, and Abbasbek Fayzulaev was first to the rebound.
The South Americans reacted instantly to the goal and quickly regained their lead. Striker Luis Díaz received a precise pass in the penalty area and flawlessly slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
After that, the Colombian players adjusted their game plan, began playing more pragmatically, and focused on maintaining their narrow lead.
