Dynamo legend Bezsonov explained why he gave up alcohol for good
Vladimir Bessonov, the legendary soccer player for Kyiv’s Dynamo and the USSR national team, admitted that he gave up alcohol entirely after receiving a serious warning from his doctor. According to him, knee problems and the risk of ending up in a wheelchair were the deciding factors.
Vladimir Bezsonov said that after consulting with doctors, he realized he had no other choice.
“I don’t drink at all now. Because of my knee problems, the doctor told me, ‘If you want to walk on your own two feet, stop drinking.’ And then he added, ‘If you don’t stop, you’ll end up in a wheelchair.’ After hearing that, I had no choice,” the former soccer player said.
Bezsonov also noted that during his playing days he could afford to drink alcohol, but it never affected his attitude toward training.
“Yes, I could have a drink, but I never came to practice drunk. If you allow yourself something, you have to make up for it with your work,” he emphasized.
Volodymyr Bezsonov is one of the most famous players in the history of Kyiv’s Dynamo. As a member of the Kyiv club, he won the USSR championship multiple times, claimed the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Super Cup, and also represented the USSR national team, leaving a lasting mark on the history of Soviet and Ukrainian soccer.
