Liverpool snatch draw against Newcastle in Kevin Keegan tribute match

Liverpool drew 2-2 with Newcastle United at St James' Park. Dominik Szoboszlai equalised by converting a penalty in stoppage time. Supporters of both clubs honoured the memory of Kevin Keegan, a former player and manager who died in July at the age of 75.

As Channel NewsAsia, citing Reuters, reports, Newcastle opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Anthony Elanga finished off a swift counterattack with a shot into the far corner.

Goals after the break

Cody Gakpo equalised 10 minutes after the start of the second half. He received the ball outside the penalty area, moved forward and fired into the far corner — the same spot Elanga had found.

Substitute Joe Willock almost immediately put the hosts back in front. His curling shot, which bounced off the turf, appeared set to bring Newcastle victory.

However, deep into stoppage time, Newcastle defender Lewis Hall forcefully pushed Liverpool substitute Victor Muñoz. Liverpool were then awarded a penalty, which Szoboszlai converted with a shot into the top corner.

Honouring Keegan's memory

Kevin Keegan was an important figure in the history of both clubs. He gained fame as a goalscorer for Liverpool, before later playing for Newcastle and managing the team, returning it to leading positions in English football.

Former Newcastle forwards Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, Peter Beardsley and Faustino Asprilla attended the match. Kenny Dalglish, who replaced Keegan at Liverpool after his move to Hamburg in 1977, was also in the stands.

Fans of both teams sang Keegan's name throughout the game. Alexander Isak, who returned to Newcastle after moving to Liverpool almost a year ago, was greeted by the stands with whistles and shouts.
