Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk advanced to the fourth round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati for the first time in her career.

In her third-round match, she defeated American Sloane Stephens in two sets, 7-5, 7-5.

At the start of the first set, Stephens took a 2–0 lead, but the Ukrainian quickly broke back. After that, both players held their serves confidently, bringing the score to 5–5.

At the decisive moment, Kostyuk broke serve and then served out the set on her first attempt—7–5.

The second set was a closely contested battle. The players traded games, and with the score tied at 5–5, the Ukrainian once again stepped up at the decisive moment. Kostyuk won the next two games and closed out the match with a score of 7–5.

Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine, 10) — Sloane Stephens (USA) — 7-5, 7-5.

In the fourth round of the tournament, Marta Kostyuk will face Russia’s Mirra Andreeva.

This will be a particularly interesting matchup, as Kostyuk lost to Andreeva in the semifinals of the 2026 French Open.

The Russian tennis player has also been in the spotlight due to her activity on social media. In particular, Andreeva was among those who liked a post wishing Russian dictator Vladimir Putin a happy birthday.

Thus, the match in Cincinnati will give Kostyuk an opportunity to avenge her loss at Roland Garros and continue her historic run at the WTA 1000 tournament.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) has published updated rankings following the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, remained in 9th place despite reaching the semifinals of the tournament. Marta Kostyuk also retained her 11th-place ranking.

Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, fell one step short of the final at the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto. In a tense semifinal, the Ukrainian lost in three sets to former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland.

As a reminder, on August 11, Elina Svitolina defeated Russia’s Katerina Aleksandrova in the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 in Toronto and advanced to the semifinals. The Ukrainian lost the first set but staged a comeback to win the match in three sets—3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Prior to that, Ukraine’s top-ranked player, Elina Svitolina, secured a victory in the round of 16 at the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament being held in Toronto.
