The ball from Maradona's legendary goal sold for $3.3 million
The soccer ball that Diego Maradona used to score his famous “Hand of God” goal at the 1986 World Cup was sold at auction in the United States. The sports memorabilia fetched $3.3 million.
Maradona’s ball was sold on August 22 at an auction held by Heritage Auctions for $3.3 million, although the lot was expected to fetch close to $10 million.
Ali Bin Nasser of Tunisia, who refereed the 1986 match between England and Argentina, took the Adidas Azteca ball after the game ended and kept it for more than three decades.
In 2023, he signed a letter confirming that it was the only ball used during the match, a fact that was also confirmed by a subsequent independent expert evaluation.
Bin Nasser sold the ball in 2022 for $2.37 million. The ball’s new owner put it up for auction again in 2023, but the lot did not sell because the bids did not reach the set reserve price.
Maradona scored his famous goal in the quarterfinal match at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico: the player punched the ball past the England goalkeeper. As a result, Argentina won 2–1.
After the match, the player stated that his goal was scored “a little with Maradona’s head and a little with the hand of God.” His team went on to win the World Cup.
