IOC Will Not Change Its Decision on Russia Despite Calls from the EU – Reuters

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not change its position regarding the temporary reinstatement of the Russian Olympic Committee. The decision remains in effect despite an official appeal from nine European Union countries demanding that the IOC be stripped of European funding due to this concession to the aggressor.

As an IOC representative told Reuters, the suspension of the Russian committee, which had been in effect since October 2023, has been lifted. The reason was that the Russian side had removed from its membership sports organizations from the occupied territories of Ukraine, whose inclusion had originally led to the sanctions. The IOC emphasized that this decision is temporary, and that the committee itself must “navigate the complex realities and consequences of the current geopolitical context.”

Despite the restoration of the Russian organization’s rights, the IOC will continue to refrain from holding competitions on Russian territory and will not invite Russian government officials to official events. No final decision has yet been made regarding the use of Russian flags, colors, or the anthem at future Olympic Games. At the same time, a spokesperson for the organization emphasized the stricter requirements of the Olympic Charter: national committees must now ensure that athletes are selected for the Games not only based on their athletic performance but also on their ability to serve as role models.

The European Commission is concerned about the IOC’s decision to allow Russian athletes to return.

Earlier, the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine called the IOC’s decision to allow Russians to compete “shameful.”

Estonia, together with its partner countries, plans to appeal to the European Commission to review funding for sports organizations that support the return of Russia and Belarus to international competitions.

Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladislav Geraskevich called the International Olympic Committee’s decision to temporarily lift the ban on the Russian Olympic Committee’s activities “shameful.” The athlete stated that the IOC is ignoring the facts regarding the involvement of Russian sports organizations in the occupied territories of Ukraine.
