Netherlands draw 1-1 with Germany in coach Klopp’s debut — Dawn

The Netherlands national team drew 1-1 with Germany in Amsterdam in the opening match of Nations League Group A2. Cody Gakpo equalised with a volley in stoppage time, preventing Jürgen Klopp from beginning his tenure as Germany’s head coach with a win, Dawn reports.

Stoppage-time goal

Before the match, Germany lost Jamal Musiala after the midfielder felt muscle pain during the warm-up. In the 13th minute, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk headed in after a corner, but VAR disallowed the goal for a foul on goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

In the 30th minute, Germany forward Kai Havertz left the pitch through injury. Two minutes later, the visitors nevertheless opened the scoring: Felix Nmecha found the net from close range after a low cross by Philipp Treu. At the end of the first half, Karim Adeyemi missed a chance to extend the lead, failing to hit the target from five metres.

New coaches for the teams

Klopp took charge of the Germany national team in July after the team’s early World Cup exit at the hands of Paraguay. The Netherlands appointed Xavi Hernández in August, replacing Ronald Koeman after the team was eliminated in the World Cup round of 32. Xavi became the first foreign coach of the Netherlands national team since the 1978 World Cup.

In Group A4, Norway beat Denmark 3-2 in Oslo thanks to an Erling Haaland brace, with his decisive goal coming in the 74th minute. Portugal defeated Wales 1-0 after a long-range strike by João Félix, while Greece snatched a 2-1 win over Serbia in Belgrade thanks to a stoppage-time goal by Tasos Douvikas.
