Oyarzabal tied Spain's World Cup scoring record

Spain national team forward Mikel Oyarzabal tied the national team’s record for most goals scored in a single World Cup tournament. The forward’s achievement was set following the 2026 World Cup semifinal match.

The Real Sociedad star from San Sebastián opened the scoring in the 2026 World Cup semifinal against France. Midway through the first half, he converted a penalty kick. The referee awarded the penalty after a foul on forward Lamine Yamal.

Oyarzabal now has five goals in the 2026 World Cup. He has matched the achievements of past stars—Emilio Butragueño and David Villa. The former scored the same number of goals at the 1986 World Cup, while the latter did so at the triumphant 2010 World Cup.

Oyarsabal made his World Cup debut this year. Previously, the forward participated in two European Championships (2020, 2024). Notably, at the victorious Euro 2024, he scored the winning goal in the final against England (2–1).
