South Korea crush Thailand 18-1 to reach Super Round — Korea Herald

South Korea’s national baseball team defeated Thailand 18-1 in a Group B match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Okazaki, Japan, and advanced to the Super Round. For the reigning four-time champions, it was their third victory in three group-stage matches.

Two grand slams by South Korea

As Korea Herald reports, Park Jae-hyun and Park Jun-sung each hit a grand slam. In the first inning, South Korea scored three runs thanks to a sacrifice fly by Roh Si-hwan and a two-run home run by Moon Bo-kyung.

In the second inning, Park Jae-hyun’s grand slam extended the team’s lead to 7-0. The Koreans added three more runs in the third and scored eight runs in the fourth, including Park Jun-sung’s grand slam.

The match ended early

Thailand scored one run in the top of the fifth inning, the first run South Korea conceded in the tournament. The game was then ended under the mercy rule: a match is stopped if the margin is at least 15 runs after five innings. A game is also ended if one team leads by at least 10 runs after seven innings.

Starting pitcher Oh Won-seok threw four scoreless innings and recorded seven strikeouts. In the Super Round, whose matches are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, South Korea will play the two best teams from Group A. The gold medal game is to take place on Sunday at Toyohashi Municipal Baseball Stadium.
