Franco Baresi, the legendary Italian defender, longtime captain of AC Milan, and 1982 World Cup champion, has died at the age of 67. The outstanding soccer player had been battling a serious illness for a long time, according to a statement on the Italian club’s official website.

According to Italian media reports, the former “Rossoneri” captain had been experiencing serious health problems recently.

As early as July 29, reports of the player’s possible death appeared in the media, but at that time the club denied the reports, noting that Baresi was going through a difficult period.

“The history of AC Milan is in tears over the death of Franco Baresi. His example and depth of character, just like his famous No. 6 jersey, will forever remain an integral and fundamental part of the DNA and journey of the entire club. The condolences that Milan extends to Franco Baresi’s entire family are the same condolences that every Rossoneri fan feels in this difficult hour,” the club’s official statement reads.

Franco Baresi played for Milan from 1978 to 1997, dedicating his entire professional career to the club.

Over 19 seasons, he played 716 matches, scored 33 goals, and recorded 24 assists.

With the “Rossoneri,” Baresi won 20 trophies, including:

  • six Italian league titles;
  • three Champions League titles;
  • a number of other national and international titles.

As a mark of respect for the legendary captain, AC Milan permanently retired the No. 6 jersey.

Franco Baresi played 81 matches for the Italian national team.

With the “Squadra Azzurra,” he won:

  • gold at the 1982 World Cup;
  • silver at the 1994 World Cup;
  • a bronze medal at the 1990 World Cup;
  • bronze medals at the 1988 European Championship.

Franco Baresi will forever remain one of the greatest defenders in the history of world soccer and a symbol of “Milan.”
