Singapore women win Asian Games bronze in team épée — Channel NewsAsia

Singapore's women's épée team won bronze medals at the Asian Games in Nagoya. As Channel NewsAsia reports, the team of Filza Hidayah, Kiria Tikanah, Esther Tan and Elle Koh defeated Uzbekistan 42:41 in overtime in the quarter-finals.

Comeback victory over Uzbekistan

The competition took place at the Aichi Sky Expo complex. The Singapore quartet trailed their opponents by a large margin but managed to come back at the end of the bout. Elle Koh delivered the decisive touch that secured victory in extra time.

This is the first medal in Asian Games history for Singapore's women's épée team. At the three previous tournaments, Singapore's women's team had stopped at the quarter-final stage.

Defeat in the semi-finals

The Singaporeans did not compete in the round of 16 because they were the top seeds. In the semi-finals, they lost 35:45 to the reigning champions from South Korea. No third-place bout is held in the team épée event, so bronze medals are awarded to both teams that lost in the semi-finals.

This award became the third for Singapore's fencers at the current Games. Earlier, Kiria Tikanah won silver in the individual épée event, while Maxine Wong became a bronze medallist in women's foil.
