Tadej Pogačar wins Vuelta opening time trial in Monaco
Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar won the individual time trial in the first stage of the 81st Vuelta a España, held on August 22 in Monaco. According to Channel NewsAsia, citing Reuters, he beat Britain’s Ethan Hayter by 0.09 seconds over the 9.4 km distance.
Advantage at the finish
Pogačar started near the casino in Monte Carlo and rode along a narrow, winding route through the streets of Monaco. At the end of the distance, the Slovenian made up time and claimed victory by a minimal margin over Hayter.

Another British cyclist, Josh Tarling, recorded the third-best time. He decided to compete eight days after the death of his brother Finn at the Volta a Portugal.
Attempt to win the Vuelta
Pogačar aims to win the Vuelta a España, the only Grand Tour he has not yet won. Success in the opening time trial was the first stage of this attempt.
