Tsygankov has officially joined Ajax
Viktor Tsygankov has left the Spanish club Girona and will continue his career at one of the most famous clubs in the Netherlands. The 28-year-old Ukrainian winger signed a contract with Amsterdam’s Ajax through the summer of 2029 and was assigned the number 11.
Ajax officially announced Viktor Tsygankov’s transfer. The Ukrainian soccer player signed a three-season contract with the club, running through June 30, 2029. The clubs did not disclose the financial terms of the transfer. However, according to Transfermarkt, Girona received approximately 4 million euros for the Ukrainian player.
At Ajax, Tsygankov will wear the number 11 jersey. For the Ukrainian, this marks a new chapter in his career following several seasons in Spanish soccer. Tsygankov is a product of the Dynamo Kyiv youth academy. He played 236 matches for the capital club’s first team, scoring 94 goals and recording 64 assists.
In January 2023, the player transferred from Dynamo to Girona. The Spanish club paid approximately 5 million euros for the transfer. Over the following seasons in Catalonia, Tsygankov played 119 official matches. With Girona, the Ukrainian played in La Liga and made his Champions League debut. For the Ukrainian national team, Tsygankov has played 67 matches and scored 14 goals. Transfermarkt estimates his current transfer value at 15 million euros.
Why Tsygankov Left Girona
The Ukrainian’s departure from Girona became a reality after the team’s relegation from La Liga. The Catalan club was relegated to the Segunda División, which meant significant changes to the team’s financial capabilities. Tsygankov wanted to leave the club because Girona could no longer guarantee him the salary he had been receiving under his La Liga contract.
On the eve of the transfer, the situation escalated. The Ukrainian was named to Girona’s roster for the first match of the new season against Leganés, which ended in a 1-1 draw, but he did not take the field and remained in the stands. This sparked a wave of criticism directed at the player. Tsygankov tried to explain his position, but the situation between him and the club remained tense.
Girona’s management subsequently threatened the Ukrainian with sanctions. The club stated that the player was not permitted to give interviews or make public statements without prior approval from the press office. Now the conflict is behind them. Tsygankov is transferring to Ajax, where he will have the opportunity to continue his career in a different league and once again play at a high European level.
