Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio convicted of drink driving

Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol. The court fined the 23-year-old footballer €14,400 and banned him from driving vehicles for eight months, Anadolu Agency reports, citing EFE.

Stop in Gran Canaria

According to EFE, Asencio was stopped at a road checkpoint in southern Gran Canaria at around 6:30 a.m. on August 16. He was driving a Porsche Macan GTS.

The first breath alcohol test showed 0.90 milligrams per litre, while the second showed 0.88 milligrams per litre.

Court ruling

Three days after the stop, the footballer admitted the offence during expedited court proceedings in San Bartolomé de Tirajana and accepted the penalty proposed by the prosecution. The fine amounts to €120 per day for four months.

Asencio is currently not playing due to a muscle injury to his right thigh, which he sustained on July 30. Real Madrid said it was monitoring his recovery, while media reported that the player could return in mid-September.

Asencio is also due to appear in court in another case concerning the alleged unauthorized dissemination of sexually explicit videos involving two women, one of whom was a minor at the time. Prosecutors claim that he shared material recorded by others without consent; the evidence does not indicate his involvement in recording the videos. The footballer denies violating the rights of both women.
